Stephanie Martin

Venus X

With a focus in clay which is oftentimes raw, unfired, and unglazed, Stephanie works to push her viewers perception of her medium. A collaboration with Katherine Hanks in 2018 that aimed to embody the strength and delicacy of the universal woman through porcelain and stoneware. Both artists felt deeply connected to their maternal selves as this body of work evolved over the course of several years.

Created of porcelain clay bodies and various exotic hardwoods, this collaborative body of work by Katherine Hanks and Stephanie Martin considers the female body through the lens of delicacy, strength, and resiliency. With allusion to the Paleolithic female figurine, Woman from Willendorf, the faceless sculptures suggest a strong connection to fertility, prompting a connection to the Venus as a "universal mother".
