Stephanie Nicole Martin studied at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design with a focus on Ceramics. Her work primarily involves earthenware, crafting both hand-built and wheel-thrown objects. Through the use of color, patterns, floral, and figurative imagery, she evokes a sense of nostalgia.
Stephanie employs various printmaking techniques to enhance the surfaces of her vessels, and digital technology is integral to her process. She creates her own iron decals and transfers them onto the clay. Her early experiences watching her grandmother sew dresses and quilt influenced her sense of craft and design. Many of the images she incorporates are rooted in the culture of the 1960s and 70s. Stephanie's work continuously intertwines history and memory, reflecting her nostalgia for growing up in the rural foothills of western North Carolina during the 1970s.
Annie Hanks Ceramics is a collaborative utilitarian ceramics studio in Chattanooga, Tennessee, founded by Stephanie Anne Martin and Katherine Hanks. The two first met through a climbing group, and after several meetings, they became friends and discovered a shared passion for ceramics. This common interest led to their collaboration, resulting in the creation of beautiful, functional pieces known to their Chattanooga friends and customers as Annie Hanks Ceramics.
