Prayer Flags
"Prayer Flags" by Michael Barringer is a mixed media artwork on panel, measuring 48 x 48 inches. Barringer's is fascinated by the symbols, practices, visual manifestations, and rituals that humankind has created in an attempt to explain the mysteries of life. Prayer flags are an example of this search. The flags do not carry prayers to gods, which is a common misconception; rather, the Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion into all pervading space.
In the composition of this canvas, a streamer of vibrant colored prayer flags is anchored in the top left corner, then cascades downward, zig zagging to the bottom. To reference the mountainous and snowy terrain of Tibet and Nepal, this streamer is superimposed against a frosty, stony type of background. In the left-center of the painting, a form of layered eddies or swirls represents this magical transportation that the wind provides.
