Series Soundscape #4
Year: 2024
"The ‘Soundscape Series’ is about my life as a mother of four young boys, and the obvious lack of silence due to my children’s unlimited enthusiasm for life and all it presents to them.
As an experiment, I made these pieces in the living room where my children were hanging around, playing, squabbling, having fun. Having learned to cope with the continuous presence of noises over the years, I was able to transition to a state of peace and quietness within this chaos. During the process, it felt like my head was under water and sounds flew lightly into the air, soft, not reaching me in full strength. As such, this series of four art works in the Soundscapes series can be considered as an ‘escape of sounds’ or like ‘landscapes of soft sounds’.
My concrete works, as they have evolved over the last 14 years, can be best described as 2-dimensional sculptures; Assemblages of concrete and various materials come together to convey emotions or bigger stories. Concrete can be lighter then you think, and certainly more beautiful then you might expect." - Marlies Hoevers
