Creative Process

Brainard embraces a fluid approach, never starting with a fixed plan. He explores whether his painting will harmonize with or contrast against the patterns in a photograph, creating an artistic tension. After gathering potential elements, Brainard constructs the collage through an improvisational “back-and-forth process,” where he integrates the collage elements and paints to evolve the work organically.
